Vietnam’s Organic Agriculture Boom: A Magnet for Foreign Investment (2024–2025)

Vietnam is experiencing a boom in organic agriculture as global demand for clean, eco-friendly products grows. Consumers in markets like the EU, US, Japan, and South Korea increasingly prioritize chemical-free foods, prompting Vietnamese farmers and exporters to pivot from conventional methods to organic practices. This shift is not only meeting international demands but also enhancing Vietnam’s competitiveness in global agriculture.

As of late 2023, around 495,000 hectares were dedicated to organic farming. The Vietnamese government has strongly supported this movement through policies like Resolution No. 19-NQ/TW (2022) and Decree No. 109/2018/ND-CP. These include subsidies, training, and aligning local certifications with global standards such as USDA Organic and EU Organic. These efforts are building international trust and opening up access to new markets (Sources: Vietnam Plus, 2024; Vietnam Seed Industry News).

  • Rising Export Demand for Organic Products

Vietnamese organic products are becoming increasingly popular globally thanks to high-quality standards and transparency. Provinces like Lam Dong, Ben Tre, and Binh Duong have developed successful organic farming models. For instance, Lam Dong exports organic vegetables and coffee, while Ben Tre’s coconuts and pomelos received Canadian trademark protection in October 2024, boosting their international recognition.

These advancements have raised farmers’ incomes while meeting demanding foreign regulations. Besides, the Mekong Delta has also expanded organic fruit farming through VietGAP compliance, helping gain access to markets in the EU and the US. These efforts ensure transparency and product reliability, key factors in attracting foreign buyers. This growing international demand is encouraging more regions to adopt sustainable farming models and further professionalize Vietnam’s organic agricultural sector (Source: Vietnam Plus, 2024).

  • Increased Foreign Investment in Organic Agriculture

The organic agriculture boom is attracting significant foreign investment into Vietnam. In one major example, Singapore’s Finc Biotech committed $33 million to a high-tech mushroom farming project. Japanese company HSC also partnered with Smart Eco Farm JSC to build a fruit processing facility using cutting-edge Japanese technology. In total, foreign direct investment (FDI) in Vietnam’s agriculture sector hit around $1.2 billion in 2024, much of it focused on organic and sustainable initiatives (Sources: Báo Đầu Tư, Vietnam Investment Review, Vietnam Briefing, 2024).

  • Strategic Partnerships Enhance Sector Growth

Strategic international partnerships are playing a key role in advancing Vietnam’s organic agriculture. Japanese giant Sojitz is teaming up with Vinamilk and Vilico on a $500 million project in livestock farming, processing, and beef distribution in Vietnam. Other partnerships with countries like Germany (via GIZ and IRRI) are providing funding, technical expertise, and training. These collaborations help Vietnamese farmers adopt eco-friendly methods, improve supply chains, and align with international organic standards. They also enhance transparency and traceability, making Vietnamese products more competitive abroad. (Source: The Investor, IRRI).
